Can I Inherit Airline Miles? A Guide for Alaskans.

Posted by Sarah-Kathryn Bryan | Sep 03, 2024 | 0 Comments

What happens to points and miles is not cut-and-dried after a loved one dies.  Airline policies vary, although some explicitly provide instructions for the death of a loyalty member.

Many travel companies include language stating that benefits are not the property of the loyalty member.  However, some airline policies state that under certain limited circumstances the points or miles holder may opt to credit a deceased member's rewards to a designated person.  Generally, airline rewards programs assume control of the decedent's points and miles once they receive notice of the points holder's death.

How To Ensure Your Points Aren't Lost in the Event of Your Death

There are steps people can take during the estate planning process to ensure that their loved ones have easier access to accrued points or miles.  A lack of planning means that people often lose out on this valuable benefit.
